Essential Software: Freecorder

Every so often I come across streaming sound that I would like to listen to again and again.  It could be an interesting radio documentary or some music.  I am a fan of Internet radio documentaries, and not all sites give you the alternative to save the audio file rather than only listen to the stream.  So naturally, I had to find a way to either capture the streaming data or record the audio..

Freecorder is a universal Windows audio recorder

I decided to choose a recording program that could capture audio at the sound card device driver level – that way it would support whatever format audio file I was playing.  Freecorder allows this multiformat support and some other great features, such as integration into either Internet Explorer or FireFox Internet browser.

Features include:

  • Unique Sound Separation Technology to eliminate background noises
  • Automatic removal of silence from start and end of recording
  • Ability to record from line in or microphone
  • Additional useful components, such as Internet radio player/recorder and email notifier.
  • Version at the time of writing supports: Windows Vista, XP, 2000, Server 2003

Requirements: Firefox 1.5 or later, or Internet Explorer 5.0 or later
