Essential Software: Debut Video Capture

A straight forward video capture tool for recording from desktop screen, webcam and video input sources with a USB Capture Device (64-bit not supported).  Debut Video Capture gives you the option of outputting to all the major video formats, including flv, mpeg1,2&4, 3gp, wmv, avi (with all the subcategories) and asf.

If you want to output to XviD or DivX for example, use the convenient drop down menu in the main window and select avi, click on the options button -> Output tab select your available CODEC (you’ll have to make sure you’ve installed the relevant CODEC first (Klite CODEC Pack from is a good choice).

To record the master volume (for line out) in my windows applications on the desktop,  I used a loop-back cable.  This links the ‘Line Out’ (Green) to the ‘Line In’ (Blue) port of the sound card – the cable has a 3.5mm headphone jack on either end.  That way, even though the program shows “Line In” as the sound device, by using the cable I can redirect the ‘Line Out’ sound to be recorded on that available sound device in the program (getting around not being able to directly select my master sound output as the sound device).

The program supports hot-keys, automatic email recording attachments, automatic FTP uploads, mirroring a recording to another location for backup.  You can choose to record the whole screen or a manually selected portion.  You can even edit output to crop, shrink or change frame rate.
